The Premiere Days
April 11, 2024, 7:30pm and April 12, 2024, 1pm
Bryn Mawr College

From the Old Library on the Bryn Mawr College Campus, composer Jessi Harvey returned to their alma mater to present, The Periodic Table; the world premiere piano piece, dedicated to Nicholas Patruno and Primo Levi, and performed by Charles Abramovic.

Charles Abramovic is an active part of the musical life of Philadelphia as well as a Professor of Keyboard Studies at Temple University. He has won critical acclaim for his international performances as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborator with leading instrumentalists and singers. He has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras, given solo recitals throughout the United States, France, and Yugoslavia, and appeared at major international festivals.

Stepping outside the realms of a traditional world premiere, the concert gave context to the work with a short talk by Roberta Ricci, Professor and Chair of Italian on the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Chair in the Humanities, and brief readings of Levi by students from the Department of Transnational Italian Studies, before continuing onto the musical realization of Levi’s “reinvigorating our thoughts on the trials of human existence and on our human dignity.”

The premiere was a special night, a culmination of over two years of work, attended by members of Patruno's family, and set the stage for future events, concerts, and collaborations.

The Periodic Table: A Conversation on Primo Levi with Composer Jessi Harvey

Following the premiere of The Periodic Table, the Department of Transnational Italian Studies hosted a conversation on Primo Levi with composer and alumna Jessi Harvey. Students from Prof. Roberta Ricci's course "Italian Culture and Society" (ITALB201) will engage in a conversation with the artist about "The Periodic Table", their concert in memory of Nicholas Patruno and Primo Levi. This event was open to the broad BMC community and to anyone interested.
